the costs of being on Instagram (or any quick social media, really)

I love Instagram.

I’ve been on this platform since 10 years ago.

I started my public platform for business 4 years ago.

  • I love how it’s so easy to practice simple skills and get content out there
  • content can quickly go viral within 24 hours - ooh, the dopamine hits!
  • I find bite-sized entertaining and educational content here and there

It’s served me well for the first 2 years of my business.

..but it dawned on me that Instagram was costing me.

No, it doesn’t cost money to create, but it was costing me in other ways.

👉🏻 It was costing me time, energy, and confidence. Watching perfect, aesthetic and curated content would make me feel not enough. Being bombarded with a ton of content and information might overwhelm me and create more stress and anxiety. This affected me in showing up in my highest potential.

👉🏻 It was costing me deeper relationships and impact. I could be creating on other platforms where I can build more depth and trust.. so that I also get to feel connected with my community!

👉🏻 It was costing me sales and impact. It takes a long time to build trust and to have people remember you on Instagram.. which is why sales don’t come through. I find that other platforms were creating more sales, quicker. Which means people experience deeper transformations and help with my services.

👉🏻 It was costing me deeper unique wisdom I wasn’t extracting. Instead of focusing my energy using my critical thinking skills, I was hung up about editing the texts, only sharing quick information for 60 seconds.. so I couldn't dive into more advanced, unique insights that could truly help people.

By the way, Instagram might have more benefits for you, depending on the stage you’re at right now. If you’re using it to practice your confidence showing up, to create content, then it may be worthwhile for you!

I’m at a different point in my journey where I’m diversifying to eventually build a sustainable business where I don’t always have to be on and can still make passive income daily.

Here are some other more “practical business costs” that I’ve noted:

  • Instagram only promotes recent content you post over the last few days
  • people jump on with lack of intention (think about your intention when you're about to read a book)
  • there are a ton of distractions on IG
  • people only remember you when you show up and forget you when you don’t
  • the algorithm only share content that will grab people’s attention the most for money.. your content might not be seen by people who need to see it

And thinking long-term..

What if I don’t have the capacity to show up? What if Instagram becomes unpopular and newer trendier social apps come along? What if the algorithms have beef with me and my content doesn’t reach my peeps?

Hence why, I believe that long-form content like email comes in.

Email is here for the long-term and you get to control it. You can't control the trendiest social media app.

👉 People are always hopping from one social media platform to the next hot one.

Friendster. Myspace. Tumblr. Facebook. YouTube. Snapchat. Instagram. TikTok. We can’t predict the next hit app.. but emails are a more promising long-term bet you’ll still be able to connect with your people no matter what happens in the next 5 or 10+ years.

Email content will land in people's inboxes at the exact time you send it out.

👉 If you have an important valuable offer or something to share, emails can help get it through to your people.. whereas Instagram will only help you promote it if they think it can hook the attention of the masses

Emails feel like a coffee chat for a deeper conversation without rush.

👉 People sit up straighter and have an intention of taking more time to understand your perspectives and soak in your content compared to Instagram where people might only hear you out for the first 3 seconds

Emails can be quickly typed up in a messy bun, from your bed.

👉 There are days when I wake up and I’m not feeling it to get camera-ready or even design something for Instagram.. I will just use words to communicate and get my message out there in 30 minutes which saves me so much time and energy.

But now, what’s the catch? What’s the cost with email?

I’ll share more in tomorrow’s email.

And if you want a full-dive into this, I’m hosting a Free 2-day Email Extravaganza Training in just a few days!

The most recent music concert I’ve been to was Bruno Mars before the pandemic and it was fantastic.. ..but like many, I have no idea what happens backstage.. Here’s the behind-the-scenes and reality for so many artists: Tldr; James Blake is a song-writer and performing artist (collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Travis Scott, Andre 3000 and many more), who is fed-up with all the capitalistic companies trying to profit off of artists. These capitalistic companies include, but are not...

Happy Friday! I have a favour to ask of you today. (By the way, this is rare. I’ve never done these kind of asks..) Plain and simple: I’m curious why you open and click on my emails. I’m saying this because I’ve recently learned that my emails have an average open rate that is 4x industry average. I have my presumptions of potentially why.. but I would love to hear from the source :) I’ll try to make it a simple multiple-choice question for you: a) the email titles are always piquing my...

8:30am Saturday morning. 3 classes. Two yoga and one barre. We are now two classes down with one more in 30 minutes (11:30am) I’m currently sitting in this section of the yoga studio: I’m going to make the most out of the next 30 minutes by writing an email for my business, proving you can also do business work with just 30 minutes a day. :) Let’s do this! In one of my classes today, there was a girl beside me who I noticed was also more advanced than most beginners in the class. But, I...
