The most recent music concert I’ve been to was Bruno Mars before the pandemic and it was fantastic..
..but like many, I have no idea what happens backstage..
Here’s the behind-the-scenes and reality for so many artists:
Tldr; James Blake is a song-writer and performing artist (collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Travis Scott, Andre 3000 and many more), who is fed-up with all the capitalistic companies trying to profit off of artists.
These capitalistic companies include, but are not limited to:
👉 websites that host concert ticket sales
👉 music stadiums/venues
👉 social media platforms like Instagram
As per his words from Instagram:
“If you are a fan and you wanna see me perform, please sign up for free at the link in bio cause otherwise you might never hear about any of my shows. I’m not going through the monopolies any more. I’m not having my fans and myself be ripped off by people who don’t care the way we do about live music.
They own all of our mailing lists and won’t let us use them to reach our fans. Every show l’ve ever done for 13 years a company has taken the ‘data’ - I.e email addresses/phone numbers of my fans. I didn’t know how important that was at the time."
And as I've said time and time again, social media and online platforms won't show your content to your people unless they like your content (i.e., it makes them money.. not YOU).
As he says: "..this app is restricting all my posts about shows, I don’t have any other way of letting you know."
(The reason? That kind of content isn't as interesting as funny cat videos Instagram could be show you instead!)
He does wrap this all in love:
“The humble mailing list is your way out of this.”
Ya'll. I’ve been sharing about the importance of building an email community, especially if you want to make money online.
If you don't take it from me, take it from a big shot with 700K+ followers online.
Emails is like sending real mails to people’s inboxes, but in digital form.
Back in the day without the Internet, advertising for your business required money to send out flyers/mails to everyone in the block.
People actually sort and read through their mails.. physical and digital.
Emails give you a direct line of communication to people who want to hear from you.
If you’re only focused on being on Instagram, YouTube, or whatever platform, you allow them to cockblock the relationship. Your income becomes heavily depends on these algorithms.
The wise thing to do if you want to protect yourself and your business is to simply start collecting people’s emails — as early as when you start building your social media. As early as when you build your business.
